Here is my take on the Pandemic. I have no fear whatsoever of catching Covid-19 or dying from it. My weight, having ballooned to over 260lbs with a BMI in the 40s during the lockdown means there were many more immediate and lethal threats to my health other than Covid.

That said, I know that people are scared and they have my sympathy and support. Out of regard for my fellow human, I follow the rules. I stay home when I can, and I wear a face covering when I’m out and about. …

I was dropping my best pal home after work, sitting outside her house in the car, when I finally lost control and broke down. I couldn’t hide the tears anymore as they stung my eyes and rolled down my face.

I hadn’t slept in days; I was utterly exhausted and felt physically sick. I hated myself for not being able to do the job they’d given me to do. Choking back the tears and sobbing, I told my pal about the informal warning I’d just received from my boss.

There were four of us and our instructor huddled together in the back of a small Cessna Light Aircraft as it started to circle and climb above the airfield. “500ft,” the instructor called out to let us know what altitude we were at.

We were supposed to be familiarizing ourselves with how things looked on the ground but I was terrified. It was all I could do not to close my eyes and keep them tightly shut. The aircraft continued to circle and climb.

My first action last week was to publish a short-form article that reflected on the Pandemic. It discussed a song I wrote last year which observed the positive changes in our society in the face of the adversity of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The song, called ‘ This Can’t Keep Us Down’ features vocals from my very talented daughter, Joanna McBride. By the end of this week, I was forced to realize that emerging from this pandemic and back into the world may not be quite as straightforward as we’d hoped.
