From trekking among the highest mountains in the world, serving my country and training for battle and even taking the controls of a light aircraft in flight, everything I have enjoyed and achieved has come from the foundations of a happy childhood.

The greatest gift I have ever received and I am sure the greatest gift anyone could receive was delivered with fathomless love from my mum. It was the gift of a happy childhood that nurtured a boundless sense of adventure.

She gave me the heart to do so many things in what has been an incredible life of travel and adventure. From trekking among the highest mountains in the world, serving my country and training for battle and even taking the controls of a light aircraft in flight, everything I have enjoyed and achieved has come from the foundations of that happy childhood.

On one occasion, a few years ago when her health was in serious decline, I had considered canceling a trip to Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti so that I could be there with her. In the end, I went on the trip because I knew that’s what she wanted me to do.
